Novel

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

by J.K Rowling

This book was first published in Great Britain in 2000, and this is the book that i have chosen to read while I am at extended stay. This book was published by Bloomsbury publishing. This book is the 5th book in a current series of 7. I have chosen this book because i have read most of the other books and i find them generally fairly solid.

Textual Conventions

This text is non-fiction, meaning it isn't real. This book is a continuous prose not lots of little stories. It is not dairy or letter format. This story is written in third person and is written in present text.

Literal Comprehension

The whole series and even this book are set around Harry Potter and his adventures around Hogwarts, a wizarding school. In this particular book, there is a triwizard tournament, where three schools come together one being Hogwarts. This event has been going on for hundreds of years and the cup chooses one champion from each school. You can put your name in by drooping your name in the triwizard cup. This year there is a strange twist where four people are chosen and there is uproar as one of the competitors is Harry, and he is too young, with the addition of the new rules. There are three challenges the first is getting the dragons golden egg, and in which the egg is a clue for the next challenge. This challenge is to get your friend of the bottom of the with a limit of an hour. Harry just manages to complete this in the given time. While down there he saves the competitors friend and keeps her in the contest. The last is more challenging, finding your way through a magical maze which can kill you if your not careful. Harry gets to the end first with Cederic the other hogwarts champion. Where they find lord voldemort and he kills Cederic. And that is the end apart from harry telling Dumbledore and Dumbledore telling everyone that the dark lord is back(lord voldemort) and no one believing either of them. The main characters are Harry Potter, Ron and his family, Hermione and Dumbledore. Also the schools Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. It is set at the school Hogwarts. The main issue is the Triwizard tournament and how to finish it. They main issues are solved by themselves and harry best friend Hermione.

Context

To be plain i am not really sure why the author chose the write this. One reason in mine option is that she really wanted kids to read more and or she was really interested in wizards and witches. One finally reason is that she just wanted to be rich although this reason isn't really likely. I do not think that the themes relate to the authors past experience.

Interpretation

After the ending of this book is would really like to know why they killed Cederic and let Harry Potter live with no injures at all. I don't not understand what happen at the start of the book it was confusing and boring. If i was to ask a particular character a question i would ask harry how he deals with all the bad stuff he gets and sometimes the bad media. I would ask the author, J.K Rowling how she thought up such an interesting and inventive story.

Synthesis

This story is not based as far as i know on anything from real life as, that would be pretty unlikely as i don't think that anything to do with wizards, or witches and as far as i know there is no such thing as magic. But the book could be invented from some random event that happened in her life.

Evaluation

The story i read was really interesting and i really enjoyed, even though everyone finished it when they were 10 or so. The end of the story was really good and always had to come, but Cederic was a real big bang. The only character i could relate is harry and Ron when there are not talking to each other, because it happens some times in real life. You can't really learn from this anything but to always keep trying and always be hopeful and happy. I didn't change my opinion of anything reading this story. The part the stood out to me was the part when harry was trying to get the golden egg from the dragon. Overall i did enjoy the story.

Creative

If i was to suggestion this book to be made into a movie i would suggest that the first scene should be removed as it is hard to understand and it is a bit confusing. It is about a family how are rich and snobbish how die without a reason and there is no trace of how they die. This scene has no relation for the rest of the book. The writer has done almost everything possible to make this book interesting for the young reader including:

  • action

  • adventure

  • brilliant description

  • well thought about characters

  • pulls you in

  • you can imagine what they look like and what the situation would be like
